Current Status
What works today — and what still doesn’t.
The game is now playable online with all matchmaking working! You can obtain gear and items through Happy Cards and the Happy Spinner, but those systems are still a bit broken. Progress also does not save after you close the game.
Known limitations
- Progress Saving — gear and items do not persist after closing the game
- Happy Cards — partially working; you can get gear/items through cards, but ticket spending and data sync are buggy
- Happy Spinner — partially working; you can get gear/items through the spinner, but stars and data sync are buggy
- Server-side Equipment Sync — gear cannot be fully sent/saved to servers yet

Tutorial / Skirmish, online matchmaking, DLC stages, character appearance customization, and gear/items via Happy Cards & Happy Spinner (session only — resets when you quit).
We are actively working to restore full API functionality, but we do not yet have an estimated completion time. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Before You Start
Install these dependencies before launching the game.

How to Play Online
Four steps from download to lobby.

Extract the files
Extract the downloaded archive to a location of your preference.
- Locate the downloaded
.zipfile - Right-click and select “Extract All” (Windows), or use 7-Zip / WinRAR
- Choose a simple path (example:
C:\Games\HappyWars) - Avoid folders with special characters or non-English names
- Locate the downloaded

Open Steam (no emulators)
Make sure Steam is already open before you launch the game.
Important: Do not run any Steam emulator. If one is running, you will not be able to connect to players who are playing through Steam.

Launch HappyWars.exe
Open
HappyWars.exefrom your extracted folder. It may take a second or two, then load in fullscreen or windowed mode.- Press F11 to switch between fullscreen and windowed
- If Windows Defender warns you, click “More info” then “Run anyway”
- Antivirus may flag the files because they are not digitally signed — this is normal for community projects

You’re in — start playing
Congratulations! You’re inside Happy Wars and can:
- Customize your character’s appearance
- Obtain gear & items through Happy Cards / Happy Spinner (a bit broken; does not save after closing)
- Play all DLC stages
- Play online with other players
- Use Tutorial / Skirmish to practice
Xbox Controller Setup
Happy Wars works best with an Xbox controller.
Plug in the controller before launching the game. Most Xbox pads are detected automatically once Steam Input / drivers are set up correctly.
Fixing Audio Issues on Linux
Add the game to Steam as a non-Steam game first.

Install protontricks (depends on your distro). Arch users can install via the AUR:
yay -S protontricks— GitHub -
Run
protontricks <app_id> xact— this installs Microsoft’s XACT runtime used by older 360 games. You’ll get a few popups saying the DLL is being registered; keep clicking OK. Get the app ID with:protontricks -s "Happy Wars"(assuming you added the game to Steam with the name Happy Wars). -
In Steam, open the game’s properties and set launch options to:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xactengine3_7=n,b;xaudio2_9=n,b" %command%
This forces the game to use the XACT DLLs instead of Proton’s builtins. - Open the game — if the steps above worked, audio should be fixed.
Common Issues & Solutions
Quick fixes for the most common problems.
Try these solutions:
- Install DirectX and the Visual C++ Redistributable from the Dependencies section above
- Update your graphics card drivers
- Disable antivirus temporarily during launch
- Verify all game files were extracted properly
- Try running in Windows 7 compatibility mode
Connection troubleshooting:
- Make sure Steam is open and no Steam emulator is running
- Check your firewall settings and allow the game through
- Restart your router/modem
- Close bandwidth-heavy applications (downloads, streaming)
- Check our Discord for server status updates
Performance optimization:
- Lower graphics settings (resolution, shadows, effects)
- Close background applications
- Update GPU drivers to the latest version
- Make sure your laptop is plugged in and not in power-saving mode
- Set the game to High Priority in Task Manager

System Requirements
Original historical minimums and what we recommend for Revival.
Happy Wars was officially discontinued on Steam, and its servers were shut down. Historically, the minimum PC requirements for the game required Windows Vista, a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon X2 processor, 2 GB of RAM, DirectX 9.0c, and 800 MB of free storage space.
For Happy Wars Revival, we recommend a modern Windows PC with Steam open for online play. The original minimum specs are listed below for reference.
